SHAHAR PROJECT

SHAHAR (Supporting Household Activities for Hygiene, Asset & Revenue) project is one of the components of Integrated Food Security Program of Care Bangladesh. SHAHAR is designed to improve overall household livelihood and food security among urban vulnerable communities. In that point of view, RRF started the program on July 2000 initially in 10 risky and less developed areas of Jessore with the assistance of CARE Bangladesh and Jessore Porasova. The initial period came to an end on July 2003 as CARE Bangladesh stopped Technical support and completed observing activities & the evaluation of the program. For the 2nd stage of work, an Exit Plan was prepared. And in the 5th year of that plan, RRF is running the program accordingly in the comparatively poor & risky areas of Chopderpara, Bejpara, Nazirshankarpur & Bakchara under 7,8 & 9 no. ward in order to make a Holistic Development (to raise awareness on Health, Mother & Childcare, to create more job opportunities as well as to increase familial income, environmental development and create an self-dependant institutional formation) of 2721 families of 10 sites.

Goal :
To protect and promote food and livelihood security of urban and vulnerable household people, living in the very risky areas of Jessore Pourasova.

  • To improve health, hygiene and nutritional practices of vulnerable high risky areas.
  • To promote effective and sustainable community based Institutional (CRMC/CDF) support system

IGA component:
Micro savings and Credit:

  • Regular IGA group meeting

Income Generating Activity:

IGA is one of the main activities for empowering the women, creation of employment opportunity for the vulnerable family especially for women & increasing the income of those families.

Capacity building of IGA group in terms of group management:

  • Assist to IGA group leader regarding IGA groups documents maintenance and plan preparation.
  • Assist to IGA group leaders in conducting group meeting and CE session.
  • Provide group management/Accounting training to IGA group leaders.
  • Assist and encourage women in adapting IGA.
  • Assist and encourage women in opening savings accounts in Bank/Insurance/post office/local level savings group.

Provide IGA skill:

  • Provide technical support to respective IGA holder in terms of preparing business plan.
  • Provide technical support to respective IGA holder in terms of SWOT analysis.
  • Provide technical support to respective IGA holder in terms of keeping one's business account.

Vocational Training:

  • Explore diversified/innovative trade for vocational trainees.
  • Identify training need and select trainees.
  • Contact with different vocational training institutes /individuals/private training service providers.
  • Provide necessary tools to vocational trainees for self-employment.

HH&N Component:

Awareness rising:

  • Identify target group (Adolescent girls & boys, pregnant mother and lactating mother).
  • Weighing children and pregnant mother.
  • Conduct courtyard session to increase knowledge on HH&N related subjects.
  • Conduct adolescent girls & boy's session about reproductive health care and others need based subjects.
  • Demonstrate food processing and cooking session through NERS.
  • Provide information on different health facilities (GOB/NGO/ Private).

SHAHAR Project has been working with the poor & vulnerable household in the high risk areas of urban. In those areas worst situation is prevailing regarding the awareness and good practice on health. Hygiene & nutrition.

Increase HH&N practice level:

  • Aware to practice on using sanitary latrines, sandal using, washing hand with soap before and after eating, covering food, feeding balance diet etc.
  • Make aware and ensure regular cleaning of household waste.
  • Activate CRMC to ensure disposal of household waste in selective site/ dumping place.

Health service provide to the community (Support from CS office)

  • Free medical service camp.
  • Volunteer create.
  • Patient referred to hospital.

CMIS component:
Capacity building of CRMC/CDF:

  • Assist in conducting regular activities (meeting, resolution writing, fund management, infrastructure maintenance, etc).
  • Provide different types of need based training.
  • Assist in keeping books of accounts of CRMC/CDF and provide technical support.
  • Assist to day observance of CRMC and CDF.

Community Mobilization and Institutional Strengthening:
The community mobilization and institutional strengthening component is the component that pulse the other three sets of activities together in to an integrated and sustainable project. The fundamental impact of community mobilization and strengthened initiation is to increase the ability of the household and the community at large to take control over daily problems that affect them.

Community development Planning:

  • Provide technical support in preparing multi-year/year plan and budget.
  • Provide technical support in managing different activities.

Resource mobilization:

  • Assist in identifying local resources.
  • Provide technical support in resource utilization and monitoring.
  • Provide technical support to write fund mobilization proposal.

Establishing Networking and Linkage:

  • Assist in conducting workshop/meeting/seminar with LSPs.
  • Assist in how to seek different services of LSPs in different areas.
  • Assist in establishing networking by deed of agreement.
  • Resolve local issues/conflict including violence against women.
  • Assist to meeting with community level LSPs .
  • Assist occupational wise meeting in the CRMC area.
  • Assist to meeting with local civil society & commissioner of Pourashava.

The fare of social awareness was conducted to make conscious and influence permanently the small income and the poor so that back out and deprived public may make themselves aware, more active and skillful in the permanent development of their life style.

# The poor public will come to know about the activities of local Government and non Governmental servicing organization.

# The back out people will be brightening at the light of self confidence breaking the tradition of silent and dependence.

# The poor people will come to know of their rights through question and answer and will make them selves responsible and related with local Government and non Governmental servicing organization.

# over all the poor public will educate them and make plan for their own development and make them selves sure to be able to do something.

THE WORKSHOP OF CONCEPTION HEALTH EDUCATION OF TEENAGERS

RRF Shohor Prokolpo has arranged a workshop in order to educate the teenager to develop their health preventing early marriage and the rate of mothers and child premature death. The teenagers were awarded of their conception health education through this workshop.
This health education programme made them known about general health, conception health, social tradition, rights, values and education. Moreover they were trained about adolescence marriage and family life, H I V /Aids, their risk, feelings, responsibility after marriage and skill through this workshop.

THE PITYFUL SELF HISTORY OF AKLIMA BEGUM (I G A)

Aklima was born in a very poor family of Somurkhola in Norail District. Her father is Abdul Aziz and mother Razia Begum. They are 5 brothers and sisters. She was given marriage before fifteen with Mozibur Rahman of Chachuri. The family of her husband was not solvency, so Mozibur has gone to the city in search of work after marriage. They started to live in a very small rented house in Purbo Chopdarpara of Jessore with the insufficient income of Aklimas husband as a van pullar. By this time 2 daughters were born to them income was not enough to go on. Suddenly one day Aklimas husband was arrested by the police and sent to jail.Aklima began to sink in the ocean of helplessness. Where would she go? She could not have any shelter to live. Right then Care Bangladesh
Distributed some white card for the development of the poor helpless and grivence of the slum through RRF.According to that white card Aklima was encourged to admitt herself in Dumketu Mohila Doll in Purbo Chopdarpara. After 3 months of savings she coulld takeloan taka 5000/= from that Doll. She began the business of selling saris. Her husband was back to the family when Aklima started to see the face of happiness.At the second time she took 8000/= taka for her business and started to maintain her family cost and installment as well.Eldar daughter was given marriage. Her capital is increased with this profitable business. Akima is grateful to RRF Shohor Prokolpo because it has shown the way to her happiness.

SHOHHAG IS NOW SELFRELIENT BY DRIVING TRAINING

Shhag is an unmarriade and unemployed son of a poor family. He is the son of Md. Lutfor rahman and Helena Begum. He is grown up indigently from his childhood. He had to stop studying when he was in class Nine because of the poverty. At that time he made a paultry farm with small amount but his fate did not support him. Rural Reconstruction Fuondation has made a doll by the name Prottasha Mohila doll in Chopdarpara in 2000. .RRF has arranged different kinds of training in its working zone to remove unemployment. With the help of Prottasha Mohila Doll Shohag joined the vocational driving training Institute organized by RRF Shohor Prokolpo in 2002. He has coverd his training succesfully by three months. After completing the driving training he was given the driving licence free of cost . He started to drive a hiring private car. He used to maintain his family and educational expences of his brothers and sisters with his income.
He made a cycle garage for his brother one year later. Then he was able to buy a private car of his own with his income. There is no want in their family now. He is living happily with his parents, brothers and sisters.Now Shohag says like Shohor Prokolpo " Technical
Education is the weapon of selfrelient . Shohag is very grateful to RRF Shohor Prokolpo for all the help given to him.

Reaching the light to the deprived children:

The regular activities of 2 schools are going on by the help of Rural Reconstruction Foundation Shohor Prokolpo to reach the light of education for the deprived and back out children. There are 120 deprived students in nursery and k.g class studying free of cost. There are 40 boys and 20 girls in the school. The children of tribal community are also related in this school.40 children of this two schools were admitted in others school last year. Beside of general education health education also is given to them. Moreover, a music teacher in helping the students to learn songs, drama and poetry. The poor children are studying here free of cost so the people of this locality may get this privilege to grow up their children and change the society.
For the development of food and life status of the members of short income family who are unfortunate, deprived, stricken with various problems Jessore Purposive they are given the facilities for manifesting the betterment of life.
The activities in 10 zones with 2721 families holding 60% card through wellbeing and T I G A among the women who are 18-45.

The health workers weight the children who are of age 0-24 months. They consult the mother about the growing up their babies according to age. If any child is not grown up within 3 months they are advised to consult with doctor. The main aim of growth monitoring is to justify malnutrition children and arranged delicious food for them.


RRF is working in 2 area (Bezpara and Chopdarpara) is arranged a lasting management
Of removing dirt by van from every house and drains through a cleaner everyday. The main intention of this management is to keep up the hyzenic environment of the area.


The cleaner is collecting dirt from the houses in Bezpara and Chopdarpara.
